Potters David and Becki Dahlstedt came to Mountain View via separate paths which converged in 1984 at the Ozark Folk Center where David had been the potter for 6 years. Together they continued to demonstrate pottery at the Folk Center for 12 years before establishing a studio adjacent to their home located near the downtown area of Mountain View. This was accomplished with assistance from an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Arkansas Arts Council which David received in 1990. Combining their talents, skills, and interests, the Dahlstedts have established a full time pottery business, producing an extensive line of functional pottery, as well as one-of-a-kind pieces which provide a constant challenge. Becki primarily makes smaller scale functional pots, designed for daily use. "I like that connection to the everyday lives of our collectors - the greatest compliment I get is when someone tells me that one of my mugs is their favorite mug and they use it all the time. My pots are made to be used, as well as to grace the kitchen counter with their unique quality - no two are exactly alike because they are made one at a time. Even if I make 2 or 3 dozen similar mugs (David likes to say they are "exactly similar") I still form each one on the wheel and they will vary slightly. As long as each one is a nice form, I am satisfied." David makes larger scale pots, both functional and decorative. Most of his pots are rooted in function as that is the tradition he finds most satisfying. An elaborate teapot can make an artistic statement and still be used to steep and pour tea. David's work has been included in many regional shows and is sold in galleries in Little Rock and Mountain View. The Dahlstedts share their home and studio with 7 cats. "It's very satisfying to do what we love to do in a small town with a strong community of friends. Occasionally we have to make a trip to the 'big city' of Little Rock to go to a movie or a good bookstore but we're always glad to get home." David and Becki look forward to welcoming you to their studio. CLICK HERE to see more work by David & BeckiClick here to see pots in progress in the studio.View Larger Map |
